Why I Reject the 9/11 Conspiracy Theories

The 9/11 conspiracy theories are an embarrassment to legitimate conspiracy theories. They are based on an ignorance of the relevant science, on an overly suspicious—almost paranoid—view of the federal government, and on a refusal to accept the overwhelming weight of the evidence.

It is especially hard to understand how anyone could argue that an airliner did not crash into the Pentagon. Dozens of witnesses saw the airliner flying low and heading toward the Pentagon. Wreckage from the airliner was recovered at the crash site. I personally know a former Pentagon security guard who was on duty that day and who saw bodies and pieces of the airliner in the wreckage.

The claims about “controlled demolitions” causing the fall of the Twin Towers and WTC 7 are based on bogus science and urban legends. The collapse of those structures has been explained to the satisfaction of all credible, reasonable observers.

There are plenty of disturbing facts about 9/11 as it is. The 9/11 conspiracy theories only cloud the issue and make many people skeptical of anyone who raises concerns about intriguing events that occurred before, during, and after the attacks. For example, how many Americans know that Al Qaeda kingpin Abu Zubaydah said that a member of the Saudi royal family and the head of the Pakistani Air Force knew that a major terrorist attack on the U.S. was going to be carried out? How many Americans know that most of the Saudi officials who aided Al Qaeda died mysteriously soon after the attacks? How many Americans know that the Bush administration allowed numerous Bin Laden relatives who were in the U.S. to hurriedly leave the country soon after the attacks?

Now, it’s certainly true that the 9/11 Commission did not give us the whole story. It seems clear that many government officials lied to the 9/11 Commission. We now know that the 9/11 Commission members themselves believed that many of the government personnel who provided testimony were lying. John Farmer, the former senior counsel for the commission, admits in a new book that the official version of what happened is essentially phony. His book, Ground Truth: The Story Behind America’s Defense on 9/11, is must reading for any serious student of this subject.
